Be sure you have all your data copied/moved and available to you, as you will not be able to access Jaws after Sunday, May 11, 2008 8:00 am HST.

As a MHPCC Jaws user, you should have completed the following:

Copied all $WORKDIR data to $ARCHIVE_HOME or your local system, because the filesystem that $WORKDIR resides on is not backed up. There is the possibility that the filesystem will need to be recreated at which point all data in $WORKDIR will be lost.

Copied all of your data (including your home directory) to $ARCHIVE_HOME, as a safeguard measure.

Submitted only jobs that will complete before 8:00 am HST on Sunday, May 11, 2008. All logins will be denied at 8:00 am.

The MHPCC systems staff is preparing for the Jaws upgrading beginning Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 8:00 am HST. The upgrade may continue through Friday, May 16, dependent on what is encountered during the upgrade.

As a MHPCC Jaws user, you should be preparing also.

You should copy all $WORKDIR data to $ARCHIVE_HOME or your local system, because the filesystem that $WORKDIR resides on is not backed up. There is the possibility that the filesystem will need to be recreated at which point all data in $WORKDIR will be lost.

Access to Jaws will be disabled for the duration of the upgrade. If you will need access to any of your data during that period, you will need to copy it off Jaws to your local system.

As a safeguard measure and a back up measure, copy all of your data (including your home directory) to $ARCHIVE_HOME.

Be aware that all jobs must start and complete PRIOR to 8:00 am HST on Sunday, May 11, 2008. Any jobs waiting in the queue, will be removed. All logins will be denied at 8:00 am HST.

To avoid network/IO contention, it is suggested you have all your tasks completed at the end of the day on Friday, May 9, 2008, as every user will be attempting to complete the same tasks.

MHPCC Jaws Users, During the week of May 11th to May 16th (6 days total), the MHPCC Jaws system will be undergoing operating system and software upgrades which will require an extended maintenance period.

What this means for you as a user?
You will need to recompile your codes in order for them to work after the upgrades.

Do you need to change your LSF submit scripts?
No, except in the case that is mentioned about the "module" command in the next question.

Do I need to change the "module" command used in my shell (for example: .bashrc, .cshrc) and user scripts?
Yes and No as there are two scenarios in this case.

Scenario 1 is the case that you do NOT need to change your "module" command because it is used without versions numbers as "module load mvapich_intel" (which means you get the default version).

Scenario 2 is the case that you NEED to change your "module" command because it is used as "module load mvapich_intel/0.9.9-2007-11-27_9.1.043" which will change due to upgraded software versions (Note: that you can change it to look like Scenario 1 if the defaults will work for you).

Will my data in /mnt/cfs/scratch/... ($WORKDIR) be safe?
No, daily scripts run to purge any data older than 14 days. This means 6 days will pass by before you can access $WORKDIR. Plan accordingly to archive or save any important data.

Will my data in /mnt/archive/... ($ARCHIVE_HOME) be saved?
Yes

What do we hope to accomplish?
We are anticipating the new versions will resolve performance and stability issues MHPCC users have been encountering.

What will be the new software versions installed?
Lustre-1.4.12
OFED-1.2.5.5 (instead of Cisco Topspin)
kernel-2.6.967.0.4 (with PERFCTR patch)
Intel Compilers and MKL version 10 (old version was Intel 9.1.049)
MVAPICH 1.0 (compiled with Intel 10)
MVAPICH2 1.0.2p1 (compiled with Intel 10)

The ARL MSRC will perform DREN FW maintenance on Monday, 17 March from 0500 to 0630 EDT.

Because of this maintenance, the CSI License servers will not be available during this time.

This may cause running jobs that are using CSI licenses to fail. Users should plan accordingly and not start jobs that will not finish before the start of the outage.

The Applications that use the CSI license servers are Abaqus, Accelrys, Ansys, CFD++, Cobalt, Ensight, Fluent, LS-Dyna, Matlab, Star-CD, and Totalview.

Attention MHPCC Hurricane User:

MHPCC will be retiring the Hurricane system on June 30, 2008.

MHPCC records indicate that you currently have an account on the Hurricane system. Your user account and data will be deleted on June 30, 2008.

If you would like to continue using MHPCC for your computing needs, you may wish to apply for an account on the MHPCC JAWS(Dell Cluster) system. Please note that JAWS is a sensitive but unclassified system, and there are security requirements for access.

Jaws emergency maintenance is complete. The $WORKDIR file system is back in full operation, without any apparent damage, and you may resume normal use of Jaws and of $WORKDIR.

Queues were inactivated during maintenance so that new jobs were not dispatched, but already-running jobs were left running. Many of the running jobs died, but some are still marked as running. If you have a job that is marked as running, please check to make sure it is actually performing as expected, and kill it and restart if it has actually failed.

Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience. Please know that we take these $WORKDIR outages very seriously, and are pursuing every possible angle to avoid their recurrence in the future.

Several improvements are already in place, and we expect further stabilization to be achieved during the nextplanned maintenance outage.
